The Weaver - Leaders Message

SGP Leader Naomi Hunter

Dear Saskatchewan Greens,

Globally, the world is experiencing exponential growth of solar power with storage. Saskatchewan is an excellent place to employ solar and wind and other renewables, and the Saskatchewan Green Party is prepared to incentivize the rapid transition to clean energy in our province. The economics of energy production clearly favour renewables, and our province needs politicians who are prepared to do the work to bring our province within climate goals that look after future generations.

SGP Announcements

Status of candidates and ridings with closed nominations for the SGP

Hi, SGP members!

I want to give everyone an update on where we are, as of the end of July, in the process of nominating active candidates. We still need to find a goodly number of SGP voices for the environment and social justice leading up to the October 2024 provincial election. I would like to emphasize that the most crucial of all of the ridings are the far northwest (Athabasca) and far northeast (Cumberland). Because of how the numbers of active voters add up in those communities, these are two ridings where active candidates can see tremendous results and help the whole party. If you know someone in ANY of these roughly 30 areas who you think would be a good fit, please give them my text and phone number, 1-306-561-8880, or my email [email protected]  Thank you! Naomi Hunter

Canadian Arms to Israel

By Naomi Hunter, Leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party

There was great celebration when Canada FINALLY announced it would stop selling arms to Israel. However that has proven to be semantics.

Canadian manufacturers could export nearly $95 million more in military goods to Israel by the end of 2025, a new document reveals.

The document was posted online as part of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development (FAAE) study into military exports to Israel. It lists some of the details of active export permits held by Canadian companies for controlled goods that will be used by purchasers in Israel.

In March, as the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s brutal war on Gaza deepened, the Trudeau government said it had stopped approving new export permits for military goods bound for Israel on January 8. But the government did not revoke existing permits, meaning that these goods are still flowing from Canadian companies to the Israeli state and Israeli arms companies.

The new document reveals that there are $107.7 million worth of active permits for military exports to Israel, of which 12 percent — or $13.2 million worth of goods — has already been exported. That leaves $94.5 million in unused export permits with expiry dates as late as Dec. 31, 2025.

The vast majority of the “end users” listed in the data are arms companies in Israel. Seven entries have an end user listed only as: “For use in Israel.”

One of the permits, which allows the sale of magnetic anomaly detection software, has an end user listed as Israel’s Ministry of Defence.

But Kelsey Gallagher, a researcher with the arms-monitoring group Project Ploughshares, said more of these goods could end up in the hands of the Israeli military.

If we oppose Canada’s involvement in this ongoing genocide, we can turn our outrage to action by emailing and phoning our MP’s and demanding these sales be cut off immediately.

'New' defence policy a dangerous turn in favour of increased aggression and war

Canada’s Minister of National Defence, Harjit Sajjan, declared Canada will increase war spending by more than 70 percent during the next 10 years to the tune of $32.7 billion. He also pledged to increase the number of fighter jets to 88 from 65 and to increase the number of personnel in both the regular and reserve armed forces. Still on the table is the issue of Canada officially joining the U.S. “ballistic missile defence” system.

Best Climate and Farm Practices Require Wetland Preservation

By Jim Elliott, Candidate for the SGP in Regina Elphinstone Centre

The description of drainage by the guest column by Candace Mitschke, executive director of the Saskatchewan Farm Stewardship Association, does not square with the need for moisture in our province. With only 12-16 inches of annual rainfall, focusing on costly irrigation over natural retention is misguided. Retaining wetlands and shelter belts builds resilience, mitigates crop failure risks, and supports sustainability amidst climate change, preserving budgets for education and healthcare.

Proposed Wind Farm project at McKenna Hall at Weyburn

There was a public meeting at McKenna Hall at Weyburn about a proposed Wind Farm project on the evening of July 31st. Our SGP candidate, North Hunter for Weyburn-Bengough was in attendance. North Hunter said after the meeting, “ I’m really excited to continue championing this project throughout this election campaign, despite a fair amount of community opposition at the meeting”.

Enbridge is proposing to build the Seven Stars Energy project to provide clean electricity to the SaskPower grid. Electricity demand throughout the province of Saskatchewan is increasing and this project would help provide emissions-free, reliable electricity.

Government of Canada Announces $11 Million to Advance Small Modular Reactor Research and Hydrogen Technologies

This funding is being provided because there is no long-term waste solution for nuclear reactors and this is to study the problem. We shouldn't be building something we have no way of disposing of the waste.

Saskatchewan’s New Oil and Gas High School Courses Are Out of Step with Global Climate Action

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe introduced new oil and gas courses for high school students in partnership with Teine Energy. These courses, offering both online theory and work placement, aim to prepare students for careers in an industry facing global decline. Critics argue this focus is detrimental to climate change efforts and students' future job prospects, advocating for education on renewable energy instead.
