The Green Take on Vote Splitting

As we approach voting for the imminent federal election, we are all hearing the cries for “strategic voting”. Voting Green – i.e., sending a strong message that people in this province want real action on climate change, along with the dynamic socioeconomic fairness laid out in our platform – IS the more strategic vote.

(If you haven't read the GREEN PARTY OF CANADA’S PLAN, you will find it here.)

This is especially so in our home province, where for three elections in a row, not a single federal riding was won by Saskatchewan Conservatives by the number of votes that Green candidates achieved in those ridings. That means that Conservatives would still have won if not one Green vote were counted. All those Green votes did nothing to influence the outcome for the Conservatives. Those Green votes did show that there are voters in Saskatchewan who care for environmental protection and socioeconomic justice; A base to build on into the future.

I would also remind those who say “This election is different from the others because of the Poilievre threat”, of how desperate we were to get rid of Harper in 2015. In 2015, Canadians elected a Liberal majority.

Federal Green Party of Canada Candidates for Saskatchewan 2025

Volunteers needed! Here in Saskatchewan, we have a great group of GPC candidates (many of whom also just ran for The Saskatchewan Green Party provincially). They can all use help in their federal campaigns. Here is contact information for the candidate in your area. These links also give you the candidate's bio so you can learn about the candidate in your area.

Confirmed in Saskatchewan:

Valerie Brooks for Yorkton-Melville
https://www.greenparty.ca/en/candidate/valerie-brooks

Naomi Hunter for Saskatoon West
https://www.greenparty.ca/en/candidate/naomi-hunter

Remi Rheault for Souris-Moose Mountain

Hamish Graham for Saskatoon South

Isaiah Hunter for Saskatoon University
https://www.greenparty.ca/en/candidate/isaiah-hunter

Michael Gardiner for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan

This is a good opportunity for voters to re-view our Green candidates' names and photos. Plus federal elections are more likely to have debates and forums, in addition to media interviews, so they get to practice these skills.

I would like to acknowledge the SK federal candidates who didn't make it on the ballot. Because they stepped up, the Green Party will be in the national debates (a major criterion is nominated candidate numbers), and the volunteer work done gathering signatures in those ridings, while not enough to get on the ballot, helped to reach people in those areas with information about the Greens. This election, candidates faced significantly increased difficulty gathering signatures due to the spring snowstorms Saskatchewan experienced this spring.

Climate change fades as a campaign issue as tariffs dominate federal election

Canadian Press, April 9, 2025 - For weeks last fall, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre challenged the Liberals to take Canadians to the polls for what he called a "carbon tax election."

The idea would have put party platforms on climate front and centre in the race, alongside concerns about immigration, housing affordability and inflation. But the Liberals' move to end the consumer carbon price, and U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and annexation talk, have pushed concerns about climate policy to the bottom of the pile.

Does it matter who logs Canada’s forests?

DavidSazuli.org, April 9, 2025 - Forestry should shift so that local communities and Indigenous Peoples have more say in management practices. Provinces should transparently report on and develop strategies to reduce influence and control over forests from outside Canada.
