End of Summer raises Homelessness concerns... again.
As we start to feel the weather turning toward winter, and nights get colder, for those living unhoused in the province of Saskatchewan, the weather can mean life or death. The lack of adequate action at the provincial level for righting the homelessness issue shows a complete lack of humanity, especially when this government is willing to spend $5 billion of taxpayer dollars on each of four proposed Small Modular Nuclear Reactors. This government has never shown more clearly that their priority is funnelling money into the hands of big business, and that they couldn't care less about those living in desperate need.
The federal government provides significant funding for homelessness initiatives in Saskatchewan through the National Housing Strategy and with specific programs like Reaching Home. In January 2025, Saskatchewan's cities of Saskatoon and Regina received a combined $8 million from a larger $91 million package to fund encampment response plans, supporting new shelters and transitional housing. The federal government also contributes through the Canada-Saskatchewan Bilateral Agreement, investing in affordable housing projects that serve individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness. The Saskatchewan provincial government shows a glaring lack of contribution.

Truth and Reconciliation Day
Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Our thoughts today are with the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Survivors of the residential school system, and all their relations.
There can be no reconciliation without truth.
Although relations between Indigenous Peoples and the Crown are essentially nation-to-nation, the provinces are explicitly required to act in many of the TRC Calls to Action.
We encourage all Saskatchewan people to read the TRC's Calls to Action, see here: https://ehprnh2mwo3.exactdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf
Ten years after these calls to action, some of these issues have actually worsened, and few of the actions have been completed. It’s not just about wearing a shirt. Action must be taken.

Greens Demand Halt to $24B Nuclear Contract with U.S. Firms Until Audit Completed
In Saskatchewan, the provincial Saskatchewan Green Party is the only political party standing against untested and extremely expensive SMRs. The NDP official opposition has finally been honest and come out showing their public support for nuclear power for the province of Saskatchewan (insert pipeline news link here).
The SaskParty has long looked to far-off Small Modular Nuclear Reactors as an answer. Meanwhile, for a quarter of the cost, we could get the same amount of electricity from already proven safe, reliable, and Saskatchewan-made renewable energy as we can get from only one small modular nuclear reactor.
Similarly, at a federal level, we see only the Green Party of Canada standing against nuclear. Elizabeth May was the only MP to sound the alarm on a $24-billion contract — the largest federal contract in Canadian history — that hands control of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories to U.S. corporations with ties to the nuclear weapons industry.
She asked the government: “Do we just write cheques to Trump now?”
And what did other MPs say?
Nothing.
No NDP MPs.
No “progressive” Liberals.
No “fiscally conservative” Conservatives.
No Bloc MPs.
They all stayed silent.
Only our Green MP demanded answers. Only Elizabeth sponsored a petition, signed by nearly 2,500 Canadians, calling for an independent audit before this deal goes ahead.
The New Nuclear Fever, Debunked
Andrew Nikiforuk, September 22, 2025, The Tyee - The industry has new powerful promoters. Tech billionaires are now thirsting for more electricity to feed their data centres and machine intelligence. Everyone from Jeff Bezos to Bill Gates is investing in nuclear reactors.
Unfortunately, these claims that nuclear power can provide cheap energy security or reverse the persistent failure of national and global policies to reduce CO2 emissions is an illusion.
‘Revival’ Interrupted: World Nuclear Industry Won’t Sustain 2024 Growth, Struggles for Relevance as Renewables Surge
The Energy Mix, September 23, 2025 - Although global nuclear generating capacity grew 2.9% to a record 2,663 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024, the industry won’t likely be able to sustain that growth in the face of limited investment, aging power plants, continuing project delays, and overwhelming competition from cleaner, more affordable renewable energy, a leading industry analyst concluded this week.
Why are there so few affordable EVs in Canada?
CBC September 4, 2025 - Doran acknowledges that EVs are generally more expensive than comparable ICE models. But Clean Energy Canada has modelled that when looking at fuelling and maintenance, an EV would save drivers about $30,000 — or $3,000 a year — over 10 years.
Community support brings Southwest Day Care home
MOOSE JAW TODAY, September 25, 2025 - The Southwest Day Care and Early Learning Centre officially reopened after nearly two years of renovations, marking both a return home and a celebration of the community support that made it possible.
The South Hill venue, one of Moose Jaw’s oldest day cares, held its grand reopening recently with a ribbon-cutting, social, and formal thank-you presentation for families, contractors, sponsors, and supporters after quietly resuming operations on Jan. 7.
Environmentalists raise concerns that spraying forests with glyphosate makes them more vulnerable to wildfires
CBC, September 8, 2025 - Amid calls from some First Nations and municipalities in northeastern Ontario to stop glyphosate spraying on Crown land, environmental groups are raising concerns over the herbicide's effect on biodiversity.
Every summer, forestry companies spray thousands of hectares of Crown land with herbicides designed to kill broadleaf vegetation which competes with coniferous trees like spruce and pine that are harvested for their lumber.
Canada’s 2030 emissions target is out of reach after progress stalled in 2024: report
The Ground News, September 19, 2025 - The Canadian Climate Institute reported on September 18, 2025, that Canada's greenhouse gas emissions stalled in 2024 at 8.5% below 2005 levels, mostly unchanged from 2023.
Want climate action? You’re part of a silenced majority
David Suzuki Foundation, September 11, 2025 - Most people worldwide want action on climate change. A significant majority would even be willing to give up some of their income to help. You wouldn’t learn that from most mainstream media or politicians.
Full Dose Democracy
FairVote Sask., September 27, 2025 - By Nancy Carswell, SGP Member - Is Canada’s democracy truly healthy, or merely surviving? This letter diagnoses our Pharmacare system, revealing how Big Pharma’s gap coverage keeps our collective will in critical condition. A prescription for real reform could cure plutocracy’s grip.
