The Weaver - Leaders Message

SGP Leader Naomi Hunter

Tariffs and Pre-approved Pipelines

At a time when our entire country has united as never before against the tariff threats from the USA, the Saskatchewan and Alberta premiers, infuriatingly and embarrassingly, have chosen to betray their own country and sign a USA Energy Security deal.  Scott Moe also has publicly announced that all new pipelines in Saskatchewan are now “pre-approved” without Indigenous or public consultation.

Premier Moe’s overreach in claiming pipelines are “pre-approved” ignores the fact that all of Saskatchewan is a treaty community. With that comes the laws designed to protect that treaty. Just because Moe sometimes talks like whatever he says happens, it doesn’t mean that the citizens of this province can’t hold him accountable and call him his bluff.

Kendra Anderson for Regina Qu’Appelle
Kimberley Epp for Regina Wascana
Mike Wright for Regina Lewvan

Let’s all help if we can. Each of our candidates needs a massive number of signatures to get on the ballot – they have a very short time to get those signatures. It takes 100 signatures to get on, but Returning Officers reject some, so it’s recommended to get 150 to be sure. We have a little over a month to achieve that.

This is a good opportunity for voters to re-view our SGP candidates' names and photos. Plus federal elections are more likely to have debates and forums, in addition to media interviews, so they get to practice these skills.

-Naomi Hunter

Naomi Hunter, Leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party Responds to Budget Day in Saskatchewan

March 21, 2025 - The Provincial Budget was released on March 19. The most strikingly horrible thing about this budget was a pathetic 2% rise to SAID and SIS payments. This amounts to around $20 per month more for people on these programs. This is particularly galling considering the SaskParty made Affordability one of its main election platform points during the recent (fall 2024) election.

Twenty dollars a month does nothing to lift recipients out of the constant cycle of clutching at scarce additional supports just to survive. This pretty much guarantees that the system self-perpetuates and no one ever gets off assistance. How can you apply for a job when being poor itself is a full-time job, going from the food bank to other services just to live at an absolute bare minimum level?

Federal minister compares Sask. premier to Donald Trump following pause of the industrial carbon tax

CTV March 28, 2025 - A federal minister isn’t pleased with Saskatchewan’s decision to pause its industrial carbon tax beginning April 1, leading to a comparison between Premier Scott Moe and U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Just like Donald Trump, Pierre Poilievre and Scott Moe think big polluters should get a free pass and everyday Canadians should pay the price,” Federal Energy and Resources Minister Johnathan Wilkinson said in a post on X.

Wilkinson added that in 2025, industrial carbon pricing is tied to more than 70 major projects and worth more than $57 billion.

"Small" Reactors Are Big Risk

By Steve Lawrence, an SGP member and former candidate. - Well, the race is on. Ontario's BWR SMR go-ahead hearings are coming up on Oct 2 and Jan 8 - available by video streaming. While only one reactor is being considered for the hearing, Ontario wants to build 3 more on the same site before 2035. The plan is to build one first and learn from that before building the others. Does this inspire you with confidence in the construction/operation of this reactor? Does it feel comforting to you?

Greenpeace Canada's reaction to Poilievre's promise to eliminate industrial carbon price

Ottawa March 17, 2025 - “This has nothing to do with tariffs or affordability, and everything to do with protecting big polluters. This lets Poilievre’s backers in the oil industry off the hook for doing their fair share to fight climate change, while regular people are left to pay the cost in the form of ever-stronger wildfires, floods and storms.”

Fraser Thomson: A tariff tactic that minimizes harm to Canada and sends a message to Trump

Vancouver Sun, March 18, 2025 - Because thermal coal simply passes through Canada on its way to foreign buyers, it is those buyers and American coal companies who will shoulder the cost of the tariffs. A tariff on thermal American coal won’t show up on our grocery bills, making it a uniquely easy choice to top the list of tariff targets.

Cuthand: High Canadian Wealth Doesn't Transfer to First Nations, But It Should

Regina LeaderPost MArch 1, 2025 - Last week it was reported that Canadian baby boomers will pass along over a trillion dollars in inheritance to their children. This transfer of wealth is unprecedented in history.

Most of the wealth is in real estate since housing prices have been rising steadily over the years.
But don’t expect this in Indian country. The reserve system and the Indian Act have stacked the odds against us. The only way to beat the system is to move off the reserve and give up your birthright.
