The Weaver February 2026

This month's Weaver is packed with wonderful information and messages from your Leader and SGP Executive. Stay up to date. Be informed.

The federal strychnine ban must not be revoked.

The Saskatchewan Green Party opposes the Saskatchewan and Alberta governments' request that the federal ban on the use of strychnine be lifted. A return to using this toxic chemical to control gopher populations harms other wildlife and the environment. It’s not limited to the Richardson Ground Squirrels. The risk to burrowing owls and the swift fox, which are not targets of the strychnine but species likely to be harmed, is much too high.

Richardson Ground Squirrels loosen soil, and this aeration allows it to soak up more moisture for plants to grow, which is actually a benefit to farmers.

Instead of demanding the federal government reinstate the use of strychnine to poison gophers, Saskatchewan and Alberta should encourage natural predators of the Richardson Ground Squirrel. That is a more natural way to reinstate balance in the ecosystem.

Year-End Fundraiser results

Our Leader put out a year-end fundraising call for donations in December, and we wanted to put a personal note in this month’s Weaver, thanking everyone who responded.

Wonderful news! Through the generosity of members, we raised enough to cover the mandatory audit that the party must have every year, according to Election SK rules. In fact, in total, we raised $3,950. Members sent in more than what was needed. That mandatory expense can be taken care of, and there is extra to save for the 2028 Election. Truly an Incredible response!

Thank you so much for helping to build a Greener future!

Child Poverty is Deepening in Saskatchewan.

Over 78,000 children under the age of 18 in Saskatchewan were in poverty in 2023, a child poverty rate of 27.1 per cent. This is well above Canada’s national child poverty rate of 18.3 percent and is the highest child poverty rate of all the provinces.

Saskatoon man still fighting for tiny home community for the unhoused

Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Feb. 14, 2026 - Ron Klassen is continuing to push an idea to bring tiny homes to Saskatoon for the unhoused population, despite running into roadblocks along the way.

He started off with a partnership with the Salvation Army, which came to an end late last year. The organization had its hands full with the work already being done around homelessness, Klassen said.

Federally, things are now more and more similar to the constricted lack of voices that we see provincially in Saskatchewan. In Saskatchewan, we only have the NDP and SaskPartu elected. This has resulted in little to challenge either party. And our democracy functions best when those elected more closely resemble the wishes and diversity of voters. Canada desperately needs Electoral Reform federally and provincially so that every vote is actually counted and visibly seen in our elected representatives. - Naomi

Canada Is Edging Toward a Two-Party System. That Would Be a Mistake

The Walrus, Feb. 17, 2026 - We can say, or at least argue, that a House of Commons made up of several parties tends toward a more robust and varied legislature that better captures the diversity, tensions, disagreements, and struggles of the country. We can say, or argue, that such a Commons produces better outcomes.

SaskToday.ca - Feb. 14, 2026 — As western separatist movements gain renewed attention in Alberta and Saskatchewan, political observers say deep structural barriers make a Quebec-style break unlikely, for now.

Fossil Industry Distortions Make the Energy Transition Harder to Imagine

The Energy Mix, Feb 8, 2026 - Oil and gas account for just 7.8% of Canada’s GDP. Some of the country’s top HBA students came back with estimates 10 times higher. We’ll need some serious myth-busting to deliver on a clean economy.

Point of no return: a hellish ‘hothouse Earth’ getting closer, scientists say

The Guardian, Feb 11, 2026 The world is closer than thought to a “point of no return” after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped, scientists have said.

Continued global heating could trigger climate tipping points, leading to a cascade of further tipping points and feedback loops, they said. This would lock the world into a new and hellish “hothouse Earth” climate far worse than the 2-3 °C temperature rise the world is on track to reach. The climate would also be very different to the benign conditions of the past 11,000 years, during which the whole of human civilization developed.
