Valerie Brooks for Yorkton

SGP Candidate Valerie Brooks

Valerie Brooks, professional educator, and mother to 3 wonderful humans, lives in Saltcoats,

Saskatchewan with husband of 31 years Darryn Brooks, and a couple of fur babies. Valerie was born and raised in Hudson Bay, SK and has come to understand the significance of recognizing this area as Treaty 4 territory, and what it means to be a Treaty person.

Valerie’s interest in politics was sparked during her undergraduate education at the University of Calgary, where she obtained an Education degree majoring in Secondary Social Studies. Her desire to run for the Green Party stems from her most recent Master of Education degree where she researched and wrote a thesis titled Treaty Education and Reconciliation: Things Non-Indigenous People should know (but don’t) about Treaty 4. Learning from Indigenous participants, this educational experience opened both her eyes and her heart to the necessity of living in balance with nature, with others, and within herself.

Valerie believes it is the responsibility of elected representatives and governing bodies to understand the interdependent nature of the world, and to govern by looking at the whole picture. Interdependent thinking is the understanding that what we do today will be realized 7 generations from now, a heavy burden that should not be taken lightly.

This type of work recognizes that the environment supports all economic growth, and both are

inseparable for a sustainable future. This work also realizes the value of every person to be a

contributing member of society, each with their own knowledge, skills, and abilities. Valerie believes seeking out and understanding opposing viewpoints will create stronger communities.

As a community-minded person, Valerie has volunteered in many local organizations and has served in many different capacities. Her most recent position is with Fair Vote Canada where she has been elected as a Board Director and is currently Co-Chair. Another passion is fulfilled by volunteering with the Yorkton chapter of Habitat for Humanity, where she is managing the organization's fundraising efforts in order to help them build quality, affordable homes for people.

A lover of nature and being outside, Valerie gardens, walks, hikes, bikes, skis, and kayaks almost every day of the year!
