SGP Remains Strongly Opposed to SaskParty’s Anti-Trans Pronouns in Schools Policy

Yesterday a judge granted an injunction on Premier Scott Moe's unconstitutional pronoun policy in schools. Almost immediately, he announced his intention to use The Notwithstanding Clause to override kids' rights. Because he couldn't win in court,  Scott Moe intends to suspend the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is a horrifying precedent for all of Canada. He called the injunction "judicial overreach", but what he is actually saying is that he thinks he is above our court system and doesn't need to listen to the law.

This is not, and never was, about so-called Parental Rights. This is about taking away the rights of trans kids, plain and simple. This will cause irreparable harm to our youth.

During World War 2, under Nazi Germany, we saw what happens when a government systematically persecutes and takes the rights away from one group after another. They persecuted the lgbtq2s population, mentally and physically disabled people, trade unionists, social democrats, Jehovah's Witnesses and others whose religious beliefs were deemed counter to the Nazi movement. As well, they of course targeted Jews, black people, Sinti and Roma people, Slavic people and those from Russia and the Ukraine.

We need to stand together and uphold the importance of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in Saskatchewan and across Canada. We must not become the starting point for the erosion of those rights.

Leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party
