Green Party News for November 9, 2011

- Fair Vote Canada points out in a press release, that the results of the election in Saskatchewan leave the opposition "neutered". Voters returned Brad Wall's Sask Party to power, that is clear, but democracy is not well served when the governing party is awarded twice as many seats as the votes would indicate, if counted proportionally. More than 11,000 Saskatchewan Green voters are left with no people reflective of Green politics in our Legislature.

Green Party News for Nov. 6, 2011

- Press Release: Deputy Leader Mark Bigland-Pritchard Explains Saskatchewan's Electric Future

- Prease Release: Green Party opposes nuclear "research" funding

Deputy Leader Mark Bigland-Pritchard noted: "In the wake of the still continuing Fukushima Daiichi disaster, it is amazing that anyone is still taking the nuclear option seriously.  Instead of listening to the
nuclear PR men, we should recognize that it is an industry with no long-term future except for the need to manage its highly-radioactive, highly-toxic and very long-lived wastes.  Besides the risks posed to human health and ecosystems, it is also very expensive - 20 cents per kilowatt-hour according to the quote given by AECL in Ontario two years ago.  And it is irresponsible to generate nuclear waste when nobody has secure knowledge as to how to store it safely."

- The Green Party of Saskatchewan notes that CBC will make a factual error in their reports while patting themselves on the back about catching a Sask Party politician being dishonest. It's the Party's hope that whatever results come on election day, that our public broadcaster make a greater effort to ask questions of our candidates and to consider our policies and our many voters' opinions.

Power to the People!

Regina, Saskatchewan – A Green Party Government would launch a Royal Commission on Taxes in the province within its first year in power. Green Party Leader Victor Lau says the time has come for citizens of the province to have to say on taxation levels, “Taxes in general have turned out to be a major issue in this provincial election.” “Rather than imposing arbitrary taxation on the people, a Royal Commission would give all citizens in the province to have their say on what taxation should look like in this province.”

Part of the Green Party’s vision for One Saskatchewan is based on the idea of more democracy and a greater voice for citizens. A Royal Commission on Taxes would be in line with that democratic spirit.

Green Party News for Oct. 26, 2011

Green Party of Saskatchewan Leader Victor Lau appeared at the University of Regina Student's Union candidates forum with Yens Petersen of the NDP, and Dustin Duncan of the Saskatchewan Party. The questions put to the candidates included their party's stance on rising tuition, and the candidate's opinion of the Leaders' TV Debate on October 25, 2011.

Victor explained quite convincingly that the Green Party's free post-secondary tuition plan in the One Saskatchewan Platform will work better for students than what the other parties are offering.

Both Mr. Petersen and Minister Duncan conceded that their personal opinions were that the format was unfair to the Green Party of Sask., and Mr. Petersen joined Victor in calling for future election debates on TV to be put under the unbiased control of Elections Saskatchewan, and out of the hands of the media organizations. Minister Duncan said that option should be looked at.

GREEN PARTY RELEASES ELECTION PLATFORM

October 24, Regina, Saskatchewan - The Green Party released its election platform today at 10:00 a.m. on the steps of the Saskatchewan Legislature. The party's document, titled "One Saskatchewan", focuses on energy, health, education, and housing for the province.

"The Green Party pledges to make Saskatchewan a net zero carbon province in electricity by 2030 and all energy use by 2050" said leader Victor Lau. "Saskatchewan people will have the option to become producers of renewable energy with a fixed rate feed-in tariff system. Under a Green government, SaskPower will buy renewable energy from any individual or corporation who wishes to produce it at a rate that will generate a profitable return on their investment. Thousands of jobs will be created in the micro-hydro, wind, and solar sectors. We would immediately legislate a ban on nuclear waste storage and transportation in Saskatchewan and eliminate direct drilling incentives. Existing government support for the nuclear industry would be shifted to renewable energy."

"Our health strategy is to guarantee a minimum income for all Saskatchewan residents. If we can eliminate poverty, we can improve health outcomes across the board. We would expand medicare to include ambulance service. No longer will the cost of medical care to the individual be linked to the distance from the nearest clinic or hospital. We would put doctors on salary, and increase efficiency in the delivery of primary care."

"The Greens recognize education as a fundamental right. A Green government would increase education funding and cap class sizes at 20 students per classroom in the K-12 system. Education assistants, cut by the current government, would be restored to ensure that children with special needs can be integrated into the classroom. We would make real investment in post-secondary education. Tuition would be phased out over four years. All people, regardless of age or means, would have real access to education."

"The housing crisis in our province must be addressed. We would incentivise the private sector as well as fund Sask Housing to ensure Saskatchewan residents have affordable, energy efficient housing. Public units would be available for purchase by their occupants. A Green government would work with municipalities to cut red tape and regulations that prevent the construction of multi-unit housing."

Regina, Saskatchewan – It’s official – the Green Party of Saskatchewan has candidates running in all 58 constituencies for the 7 November provincial election. Say no to Scabs!

Saskatoon, October 20, 2011 – The Green Party of Saskatchewan has rolled out its Trade Union platform for the November 7 provincial election. Party Leader Victor Lau says Saskatchewan Greens will always stand with Working People right across this province, “I’ve been a trade unionist for over 20 years, so I am personally familiar with the daily struggles of working people.” The highlights of the Trade Union platform include:

  • Amend the Trade Union act to include Anti-Scab provisions,

  • Remove Legislation that Prevents the Certification of Unions when they have over 50% card recognition (Re-install instant certification of a workplace when a union can demonstrate 51% support),

  • Implement Pay Equity Legislation that is long, long overdue, and

  • Strengthen the Trade Union Act so that unionized workers have more control over their elected officials and transparency of how their union dues are spent.

Power to the People!

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Green Party of Saskatchewan has a unique idea for fixing and maintaining Saskatchewan's highways. Party Leader Victor Lau notes that Crown Corporations have served the people of Saskatchewan very well in the past, “Everyone in Saskatchewan continues to benefit from a higher standard of living because of the excellent service that our Crowns provide us.” “Therefore it makes sense to create a new Crown Corporation whose purpose is to fix and maintain Saskatchewan highways.” The Crown Corporation would be called SaskRoads and would provide many employment opportunities for thousands of people across Saskatchewan.

Action Plan needed for Rural Highways

The poor state of highways across rural Saskatchewan is a major issue in this provincial election campaign. Several highways across the province have fallen into terrible disrepair and are urgently in need of being fixed. “The situation with highways in rural Saskatchewan is absolutely unacceptable,” says Sigfredo Gonzalez, the Green Party of Saskatchewan candidate in the Estevan constituency. The Green Party of Saskatchewan will work together with citizens and municipal governments to lobby the provincial government for an action plan to make our highways safe again. “We will not allow rural people to be abandoned in their hour of need,” says Party Leader Victor Lau. “Allowing broken highways to continue in rural areas is inconsistent with our party’s vision of One Saskatchewan.” A Green Party Government would make an action plan for Saskatchewan Highways an urgent priority.

PRESS RELEASE:

Green Party of Saskatchewan Supports Emil Bell's Hunger Strike Against Nuclear Waste & Transportation

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

The Green Party of Saskatchewan has thrown its support behind Canoe Lake's Emil Bell, the Aboriginal activist who has launched a hunger strike protesting nuclear waste and transportation in Saskatchewan.  Bell is demanding every First Nation in Saskatchewan to sign a Band Council Resolution prohibiting the storage and transportation of nuclear waste in our province.  Canoe Lake First Nation has already pledged to sign the BCR, and support is mobilizing on reserves around Fort Qu'Appelle.

The Green Party of Saskatchewan is strongly opposed to the development of the nuclear industry in Saskatchewan, suggesting in its policies that no money be spent on nuclear power.  It calls on the Government to abandon all proposals to develop nuclear programs for Saskatchewan, and would introduce legislation prohibiting the transportation and storage of nuclear waste across the Province.

Green Party Interim Leader Victor Lau says, "I challenge Mr. Lingenfelter and Premier Wall to also support Banning Nuclear Waste Disposal in Saskatchewan.  A clear majority of Saskatchewan residents do not want nuclear waste or nuclear power.  It's time to abandon this failed technology."

Emil Bell is currently camped out at Fire Lake, a mile east of Jans Bay.  He can be reached by cell phone (306) 288-3119 or by emailing miksou@yahoo.com

Victor Lau is Green Party candidate in the riding of Regina Douglas Park, running against NDP Leader Dwain Lingenfelter.
